

Rugrats was formed by the then-husband-and-wife duo of Gábor Csupó and Arlene Klasky, along with Paul Germain in 1989. Klasky Csupo had a major animation firm at the time which also provided services for commercials and music videos.

The series garnered high ratings on Nickelodeon and was the network's top-rated show from 1995 to 2000. Rugrats gained over 20 awards during its 13-year run, including 4 Daytime Emmy Awards, 6 Kids' Choice Awards, and its own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Two direct-to-video specials were released in 20, under the title Rugrats Tales from the Crib. Tie-in media for the series include video games, comics, toys and various other merchandise. Another spin-off series, Rugrats Pre-School Daze, was considered, but only four episodes were produced.

The special acted as a pilot for the Rugrats spin-off series All Grown Up!, which chronicles the lives of the babies and their parents after aging 10 years. On July 21, 2001, Nickelodeon broadcast the made-for-TV special "All Growed Up" in celebration of the series' 10th anniversary. The series returned to Nick from Decemuntil mid 2011, and again for a one off marathon coinciding with the Super Bowl in February 2013. The series continued to air in reruns on Nickelodeon until December 31, 2007, although the Christmas special "Babies in Toyland" continued to air every Christmas through 2012. The final episode aired on August 1, 2004, bringing the series to a total of 172 episodes and 9 seasons during a 13-year run, tying "Rugrats" with King of the Hill as the eighth longest-running American animated television series. As a result of the show's popularity, a series of theatrical films were released The Rugrats Movie, which introduced Tommy's younger brother Dil, was released in 1998, Rugrats in Paris: The Movie, which introduced Kimi and Kira, released in 2000, and Rugrats Go Wild, a crossoverfilm with fellow Klasky Csupo series The Wild Thornberrys, released in 2003. In 1996, Klasky Csupo Animation began producing new episodes, and the show's fourth season began airing in 1997. From 1995 to 1996, the only new episodes broadcast were "A Rugrats Passover" and "A Rugrats Chanukah", two Jewish-themed episodes that received critical acclaim during this time, well after the end of the show's production run, Rugrats began to receive a boost in ratings and popularity, due to constant reruns on Nickelodeon. Production was initially halted in 1995 after 65 episodes, with the last episode airing on May 22, 1994. The series premiered on Sunday, August 11, 1991, as the second Nicktoon after Doug and preceding The Ren & Stimpy Show. Adults in the series are almost always unaware of what the children are up to.

The show focuses on a group of toddlers, most prominently Tommy, Chuckie, twins Phil and Lil, and Angelica, and their day-to-day lives, usually involving common life experiences that become adventures in the babies' imaginations. As far as whether or not the cast believed Betty to be gay in the original series, E.G.Rugrats is an American animated television series created by Arlene Klasky, Gábor Csupó and Paul Germain for Nickelodeon. Looking back on the original series, it seems very much implied that Betty’s sexuality was gay or bisexual, despite it being a kids cartoon.

Seeing gay characters on TV wasn't a complete rarity when Rugrats was first on back in the 1990s, but it certainly wasn’t as common and nuanced as it is now. So yes, Betty is a member of the LGBTQ community. Although we all kind of had ideas or feelings about them, the times we’re in, it’s really beautiful that people get to be who they are, and we’re embracing everybody’s freedom, everybody’s desire to be authentic. It turns out Daily couldn't be prouder about the representation being made abundantly clear in the rebot. Daily, the voice behind many iconic cartoon characters, reprised the role of Tommy Pickles for the highly anticipated reboot, with Santa Clarita Diet and Dead to Me star and queer actress Natalie Morales taking over the role of Betty DeVille.
